So just a clarification, are we supposed to make the recipes exactly as described, or are we allowed to substitute/leave out ingredients (just the ones that won’t affect the actual chemistry of the recipe, of course) if we want, as long as we let everyone know what we’ve changed?

    • LW September 17, 2010 at 9:14 PM #

Sure you can change things if you see fit, just come clean about what you added or omitted on your blog post for that week. :) We are not strict on sticking straight to the recipe. :)

I just got my copy of the book today and it’s a good thing that Dorie chose the recipes as I would have had a very hard time choosing! Can’t wait to get started!

I’m so excited about this challenge! Thanks, Dorie, for choosing the first round of recipes! I’m going to read through all of them this weekend.

FYI — I’ve made two recipes from the book so far, and they were both fantastic!

Yum! I just read the recipes and I’m drooling already!!

Hmm…the link didn’t post right, so just do a search for “French Fridays with Dorie” in Groups, and you’ll find it.

Dorie rocks for giving these recipes to those who don’t have the book yet! I ordered the book for myself for my birthday. I’m so excited. I rarely buy new books, because we’re always broke, but I deserve it.

Yay, Amazon just told me that my book finally shipped. Now I just have to wait till Oct 13, because apparently the book is walking itself over to Egypt. So glad you posted the recipes for the first month :)

    Get ready …Get set …Cook!
I’m exercising restraint ~ so tempted to cook my way through October before I even flip the calendar.

    • gaaarp September 25, 2010 at 11:07 AM #

You’re more disciplined than I. I’ve already made the Gougeres, and I have the ingredients to make the Mustard Tart this weekend.

My book finally came today after the first order went to the Bermuda Triangle. Can’t wait to get started!

I’m reading through the book in my leisure time, with my feet up in my recliner. It’s beautifully done. Did have an odd moment with the word “chicer”, though, early on. My brain kept wanting it to rhyme with “nicer”, not mean “more chic”.

So excited for French Fridays!! YUM!

Who doesn’t love gougeres? What a gift to have a reliable, go-to recipe for this great wine-on-the-patio munchable. Thanks to Dorie for starting us off on the right foot and to the busy elves who got this site up and running for us!

I’ve been over-eager. The last reciep, Hachis Parmentier (with turkey), is in the oven now, and the month just started…

  22. Penny October 10, 2010 at 12:17 PM #

I am so excited to be a part of the group. My book is on order, so I appreciate Dorie sharing the first four recipes with us.

So this is a little early, but does anybody have any pointers for why my springform pan (I bought for the apple cake) won’t stay together? Maybe I just bought an overly cheap one? The bottom doesn’t seem to stay attached to the ring. Are they always like this? It’s fine if I push down, but if I push up at all, it pops right out. So frustrating. I don’t *think* it was like that when I first bought it, but I took it apart to wash it right away so I don’t remember.

    • Mary October 17, 2010 at 11:17 PM #

Usually the have 2 rings at the bottom, and the base sits in between those. If it’s crooked at all it will pop out. I ended up using a regular cake pan because my springforms are bigger and it worked well. By the way, the apple cake is fantastic!
