It’s a French (Food Revolution) Friday with Dorie!

(I’m posting this on behalf of Mardi — Betsy)

Those of you who have been following my blog for a while now will know that teaching kids to cook is something I am passionate about.  Through my Petits Chefs and Cooking Basics classes, I’m teaching my students how to cook, yes, but also life skills that will serve them well as adults.

This year, for Food Revolution Day (May 16th 2014), Jamie Oliver wants everyone to “get kids excited about food”.   If you’re interested in participating in your own community, the website offers many ideas for getting involved.  Find a local Ambassador to see what’s already being organized in your area! Cook a meal from scratch with your kids using one of the official recipes.  There are so many different ways to get involved!

As a Food Revolution Day Ambassador, I know a lot of people want to participate but are perhaps not able to do an “in person” event so once again, I thought it might be fun to get some global participation with the Doristas taking part virtually, just like last year.

On Friday May 16th, here on French Fridays with Dorie, we’re asking all FFWD members to choose a recipe from Around my French Table that you think every child should know how to make (I personally think AMFT should be required reading in high school but that’s just me!).

When I was chatting with Dorie about this idea, I said:

“Imagine a whole generation of kids growing up capable of cooking all the dishes in AMFT!”

Dorie replied:  “What a thought!  I would love to see a generation that can cook and wants to cook for themselves and others.  The world would be a better place.”

Blog about your “must know Dorie dish” on May 16th – Food Revolution Day.

Tell us why you think it’s a “must know” dish. Maybe it’s a dish you wished you had known how to make back when you left home and were fending for yourself. Maybe it’s a dish your kids love to cook and eat.

Share it on all your social media channels using the #FRD2014 hashtag.

Please let me know you are “in” by leaving a comment below – I’ll register us all so we can stand up and be counted this Food Revolution Day!

Thanks everyone for your support so far and in advance! I am having a hard time figuring out what I should write about – but fortunate that I am spending the weekend beforehand with friends and their little kids so we’ll be cooking/ baking together!

I’m in, of course, and I already have a young 17-year-old kid who is going to cook with me. I think half the Aspen High School football team is going to be cheering him on so it should be fun and hilarious. What better way to have kids enjoy good food.

    Hey Everyone,

To generate some enthusiasm and to get everyone on board, I have a suggestion. I’m cooking with a teen-age boy. I am going to come up with five recipes from the book that I think he should know. Then I will let him pick what he wants to make. Help me out here. Let’s throw out some suggestions of recipes that are not only must-knows but also kids-friendly. Liz, what would be Katie’s ideas of what she’d like to cook with Mom? Diane? Mardi? You’re the pro.

I am certainly in as well – but I already registed with the UK chapter – since the theme is “Let´s kids get excited about food”, we will have 16 kids under 18 for lunch and dessert. We will be cooking some of it together and I will copy all the recipes for them, to take home. Two of our kids are helping to choose the recipes.

Thank you for having a “Food Revolution French Friday”!

I’ll definitely try and make this one!! GREAT idea. My son cooks, my daughter — not so much!

I am in! Hoping to find an actual kiddo (perhaps a niece or nephew) to participate along with me, but will be participating regardless.
