Fall in New England, a Seasonal To-Do-List, and of course, Dorie’s delicious French Apple Cake. The post is up at the Second Lunch! http://bit.ly/bhbCit
Hi! I posted early this week because I’m having surgery tomorrow. Don’t worry. It’s only minor, but I won’t be in any condition to post for the next couple of days.
Oooo la la la, am i early ?
Gosh this was the most gorgeous cake , i topped it with crumble , added cinnamon, spice and all things nice to one part of the batter and forgot to add the ground coconut :-(
Dorie, u recipe rock and are absolutely fool proof, i love this one whether topped with a pear or a blueberry sauce!!
Had step by step pics[again] so took me awhile to upload ,so worth the deliciousness!!
And honestly why ever did i halve the recipe [am eating so oo muc]
And then there is this funny incident i added ,i asked somebody to get me 4 different kinds of apples and she brought me pears too [i already had them home, lol]
I was thinking of trying this with pears! :)
Oh, SO good!!!
Great Apple Cake!
5 for 5 so far!
Annnndddd…. I loved it too!
Great Fall dessert!! I love how easy Dorie’s recipes are…with great results! Looking forward to seeing what we will be cooking in November!!
Here is my link…. http://hadennews.blogspot.com
This week I learnt not to mess with Dorie … well at least not when she refers to spring-form pans …
… still I got some nice little cakettes and they made a nice birthday cake for myself!
Yay for apple season! The co-workers absolutely loved this! Can’t wait to make it again in the right sized pan.
Post will be up after midnight ET:
A delicious and easy cake. http://lolasartisticendeavors.blogspot.com/frenchfridayswithdorie
I baked it twice. The link will be active at midnight.
(Up after midnight.)
Oh … and will the November recipes be up today? Thanks!
Perfect for fall.
Mine will be up at midnight eastern.
I loved this cake!
I added a caramel sauce – yummy!
Would be a lovely dessert.
A pleasant surprise.
I made the cake for dessert and then used the leftovers for dinner the next day, paired with a pork chop and some Vintage Cheddar Bechamel sauce and it was fantastic!!!!
The rum is the kicker in this one!
I have made 2 already.. and try making it with almond extract instead of the vanilla – yum!
I agree with josefa, the rum made the difference in this cake. I made it twice too!
I can’t get on to your site.
Oh, so good!!
I have another set of apples already for the next one!
Baked it twice, considering a third…
Love this cake! Family loved it too. It was great the next day at breakfast with a nice caffè latte. Great recipe:)
here is my link:
I was thinking breakfast too:)
This cake is so pretty and very easy to make!!!!
This one is super easy yet so good!
Loved it! This will be my go-to recipe when I want a little apple cake.
Yay – My first FFwD post!
My family loved this cake. Guess what’s for breakfast!!!
Loved the cake but loved it more the next day. Toasty butter browned French toast with thick sliced bacon and maple syrup..Amazing http://thescreenporch.blogspot.com/2010/10/marie-helenes-apple-cake-french-fridays.html
This was amazing. Amazing and delicious.
Marie-Helene and I should not have been left alone together (at least her cake and I shouldn’t).
I took this apple cake to the office and they were my tasters…and, they ate the whole cake! Loved it! So…I’ll be making it again soon for the home crew. Easy, delicious, and the baking aroma that filled my house was…..Heaven!
We absolutely loved this. My favourite so far! I couldn’t use my stove so cooked it in my convection oven and it turned out lovely!
Post will be up a bit after midnight pdt.
Apple Cake and a link to the round up from Dorie’s birthday party this past Sunday if you missed it. :)
This was great!
I made muffins. Should’ve stuck with the traditional cake! Yummy but not so pretty.
Awesomely easy! http://www.eatlivetravelwrite.com/2010/10/french-fridays-with-dorie-marie-helenes-apple-cake/
I am so happy to finally post a recipe on FFWD. This cake was wonderful!
I really enjoyed making this cake.
Marie Helene cake….train style….
Here we go!
This might be my favorite Dorie recipe ever…but then, I always say that, until the next one.
I loved this cake, as did my co-workers. So easy, and I love how it’s chock-full of apples!
We love apple cake in this house. More apples than cake, we loved the light sweet taste of Marie Helene’s apple cake. As per Dorie’s suggestion, I used different apples: Granny Smith, Harrelson, Honey Crisp, and Fuji. With so few ingredients, I could taste the apples, the cake, and the hint of vanilla and rum to flavor it all. The cake was all gone in just a few days. We loved it.
Here is the link. I have posted a “wrap up” of October’s recipes to my blog. The apple cake is at the bottom. http://www.peaceandloveinthekitchen.com/2010/10/french-fridays-with-dorie-october-in-photos
This was very tasty…I almost didn’t make it because it is sweet, but I’m so glad that I did.
The cake was incredibly easy to make and my favorite parts were the rum and apples! I made the cake twice but added some spices, more vanilla, more rum(!!) to the second one. I also made some rum whipped cream to go along with the cake. YUM!
Fantastic cake but did anyone else have trouble figuring out how to spell “Marie-Hélène”?
Trevor Sis Boom
I just got the cookbook, so this was my first recipe. What a start!
Happy [French] Friday!
I hate that there’s more of this sitting at home….and I’m stuck at work without it. I can’t WAIT to make this again!!
This was good and easy, and good!!
Also great for breakfast! http://wp.me/phetk-1qB
Thanks Dorie for another winner! My husband wants this cake with dinner, not dessert!
Great cake, easy recipe….we loved it out of the oven and the next day!
It was a birthday Party Cake for Dorie. Happy Birthday Dore !!!! YAY
Check out the Party
Running late today – here’s my link!
I totally fell in love with this recipe! Ooh la la!
With different booze!
It’s been great fun to see how everyone’s cake turned out. Here’s mine: http://brandnewcrayons.com/2010/10/29/marie-helenes-apple-cake-french-fridays-with-dorie/
I used a little bourbon instead of rum. Not sure how well bourbon replaces rum, but it was pretty tasty!
So easy and good! Loved it.
what a nice, simple cake! loved the apples, butter, vanilla, rum… a beautiful combination of flavors!
This is my favorite since the gougeres:
J pronounced this dessert as “the best cake I’ve ever eaten!” Rich with butter and chunks of local Cortland apples, this sublime dessert was simple and delectable. We went back for seconds and finished off the rest the following morning. This cake deserves a round of applause!
I may replace some of the all-purpose flour with a smidge of white whole wheat flour. I’ll report back…
Marie-Helene’s Cake at Frankly Entertaining
I had a larger spring form pan than the recipe called for, so I decided to increase the ingredients by half. I kept the same baking time and it worked out great.
I also decided to use lemon juice instead of the rum, which I am sure changes the flavor significantly. But we all loved it and everyone is looking forward to me making it again!
I decided to gild this lily by sprinkling on some turbinado sugar and hitting it with a kitchen torch. So, so good.
Here’s the apple cake – so easy & delicious! Smells like October too, I think:) so a good one to finish out the month.
Everyone loved this cake. It will become a standby in my house! studioofgoodliving.com
oops. here is the link. http://studioofgoodliving.com/2010/10/french-fridays-with-dorie-marie-helene%E2%80%99s-apple-cake/
So many Apple Cakes, I love it! :)
My post is a recap of Dorie’s visit to Dallas and this yummy little cake!
This cake was easy and delicious! And, I met Dorie!
This cake is perfect for last minute guests as I usually have all these ingredients in my pantry. The flavor actually reminded me of my apple pancakes that I make! I love how you can keep it simple or dress it up with different toppings. I used Fuji, Gala. Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith Apples in mine and topped it with fresh whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.
Here’s my photo:
Short and sweet!
This was a fantastic recipe! I’m so glad I found this group and cookbook. I am enjoying it already! My husband has eaten half the cake and I just made it last night!
Not thrilled with the outcome although the flavors are nice. Too wet and bread pudding-y for my taste. Too many apples maybe? I even baked it 30 extra minutes.
I’m thinking I’ll throw slices into a hot skillet in the morning for a nice Saturday breakfast.
Mine was very moist as well, and I baked it longer too.
Apple cake, apple cake, apple cake!!!!!! yum!
Oh, this was a great recipe to try!
I used cognac instead of rum, with outstanding results. My house smells sooo good! I was trepidations since there was no cinnamon, or nutmeg, or cloves. I mean really! How can you cook apples without spices? I was wrong.
Yummy Apple Cake!
For reasons unknown, I felt really witty while I wrote this post. Maybe this cake is just so good it made me bring my A game to the blog post!
A make again for sure!
I finally got mine made last night! It was very good with ice cream. I did the 1 1/2 times the recipe but only put in 5 apples
This cake tasted great! Looks on the other hand, were so-so due to used error! Next time I will use the correct pan size or increase the recipe as suggested above. I also might use a touch smaller apples.
My forever apple cake is finally found! Loved this with no spices and that rum elevates it. Yummy breakfast cake too.
Oh how we loved this cake…the aroma while it was baking was intoxicating!
Thank you Dorie for another wonderful recipe! A keeper!
I think I’m in the minority today. The recipe had so much going for it. It was easy to make and both smelled and looked great. I just didn’t love the end result like everyone else did. It happens…
Here’s mine: http://stickygooeycreamychewy.com/2010/10/29/ffwd-marie-helenes-apple-cake/
Oh how I loved this one! Butter, sugar, apples, rum, no fancy or difficult techniques required but oh so very very good!! http://www.moodyfood.net/2010/10/photos-only-fridays-boozy-apple-cake/
Our first week and the blog and we very much enjoyed the cake. We will have to go back to work on the earlier October recipes as well :)
This cake turned out so pretty, I felt a little guilty that it was so simple to make!
I left out the rum, but it was delicious anyway.
Slow today. Excited to read about eveyone else’s results!!
I barely had time to take a picture, we ate up this cake so quickly!
I make this cake twice. The first time I shared, the second, I didn’t.
Yummy fall apple cake is here:
So delicious that I made it twice, the second time I made sure to have ice cream ready to go!
yum o licisous!!!
Just made it! Here’s mine: http://www.jemangelaville.com/2010/10/29/ffwd5-marie-helenes-apple-cake/
Plus, I got to meet Dorie when she was in Portland, I even got a picture :)
Trying to leave a comment on your blog … keeps telling me 6+6 is not 12 …. argh! Anywho, just wanted to thank you for sharing your Dorie photos. So fun!!
oh, sorry about that…I don’t know what the captcha thing was doing… :/
And thanks for posting a comment here! It wa so nice to meet her :)
Here is mine! I loved choosing the divers apples, as I am a real apple lover! I found this came out very moist and more like a kugel than what I would consider a cake (perhaps due to the fact that I only had a 9″ springform and doubled the recipe, and then used my 9″ and some individual ramekins). Love the rum!!
A little late, but still DELICIOUS.
I would like to offer a BIG smooch to whomever first suggested brown butter. It brought this cake to a totally new level.
Mine broke b/c we were so impatient (and didn’t use a springform) but it was still so tasty, we didn’t care!
My husband declared this cake the best he’s ever eaten …
Can’t believe I managed to make this tonight!
I made mine weeks ago and am barely getting it posted on time! Hate it when Friday’s feel more like Mondays! At least it’s over! At 4 today I learned that Trick or Treating was going on tonight in our county. Glad I wasn’t trying to bake during that fun…
I’m looking forward to trying this with browned butter as some mentioned in the questions section… and reading Mrs. Bones comments about that…can’t try it soon enough! Wonder how many varieties of apples I have in the house…hmmm….
My Favorite recipe!
Love it! I will definitely make this again & again!
While quite tasty…I would not say it was as stellar as the previous three recipes.
I loved this cake:
Here’s my link. I did a gluten version and a gluten-free version this time: http://bit.ly/90NTLe
A little late, but here it is nonetheless! I’m not sure I’d categorize this as a cake, but I thought it was good and I’ll probably make it again- next time using apple brandy instead of rum. :)
Also a tad late… it’s just past midnight here in CA! The cake was awesome. Definitely an easy and great recipe.
I’m sure it’s still Friday (somewhere in the world).
This cake was out of this world.
Mike, beautiful photo. I thought the cake was delicious. I have lost my camera cable, I’m thinking all the Friday’s will be gone by the time I find it.
I found my cable, here is my link http://rosemarygarlicgarden.blogspot.com/2010/10/marie-helenes-apple-cake-ffwd.html
I liked the flavor of this cake–just the right touch of rum–but I found the batter a bit squishy where it pooled at the base. The texture reminded me a bit of bread pudding, rather moist as if soaked instead of the expected cake texture. I really liked the different taste from the different apples. I warmed it to serve and topped it with some homemade caramel sauce.
When will you post the final list for the November recipes?
Loved how effortless this cake is! http://bit.ly/9SWHFP
I baked it Friday night. Saturday morning it was delicious. That bit of resting really allows the flavors to mellow and accentuate.
Better late than never: http://www.katecooksthebooks.com/uncategorized/around-my-french-table-marie-helenes-apple-cake
I finally got it put together late Saturday night…unfortunately (or fortunately?) we fell asleep before it cooled enough to eat…but it was lovely with brunch the next morning!
Super easy and super delicious. Maybe I should substitute this for Apple Pie on Thanksgiving???
I guess better late than never! My Friday turned into Sunday before I knew it.
Like many others, it’s better late than never for me, too. I *made* the cake Friday, 2 of them, but I didn’t write it up till now.
Baked this on Saturday night, and took some photos to post today. For me this was the most successful recipe so far.
Late writing up my blog post, but made it about a week ago. Fun and easy cake that is also unique and delicious!
Made it twice, second time in a small cast-iron skillet:
Love apples, especially in apple season…here’s my post: http://grandmaskitchentable.typepad.com/grandmas_kitchen_table/2010/11/french-fridays-with-dorie-marie-helenes-apple-cake.html
yum yum the yum.
I love this cake and will make it over and over again! I want to make mini’s and serve them for a girls lunch!
This is definitively a keeper…
Oops, forgot to post the link!
Ladies, sorry I am so late posting. We just moved to Colorado Springs and I missed the Hatchis Parmentier and Marie-Helene’s Apple Cake. I’m caught up now and back on track!
Amazing! I will make this again!
I was out of town so am very late posting – now I am over a week behind. Anyway, I had a 9 1/2″ pan so increased the recipe by 50% and would not want it any smaller :) Very good cake and I liked that it was not as sweet as most cakes.
My picture: http://cookingluciacara.blogspot.com/
Absolutely delicious! This WILL be a part of our Thanksgiving meal this year!
Better late than never!! I loved this cake. It was more like a bread pudding, which I love!
just joined the group and got my book, so I’m a little behind, but I will catch up!
No links, but the cake was delicious – and so easy to make. Two things I like alot for it to be a repeater in my kitchen!
Another recipe from the past completed! I made this cake today for a dessert potluck, and people really liked it. Yum!
