November Recipes

Okay folks, we are only in our second month on this adventure, but we are going to do things a little differently this month. (and probably next month, too.) Since one of the biggest American holidays is this month, we are going to let you decide the order in which you make the recipes for this month. The recipes are as follows:

  • Potato Gratin, on pages 360 and 361.
  • Caramel-Topped Semolina Cake, on pages 438 and 439.
  • Pumpkin-Gorgonzola Flans, on page 146.
  • Roast Chicken for Les Paresseux, on pages 200 and 201.

I will post all of the P&Q’s and LYL posts for the entire month this weekend. We hope this makes cooking along with FFwD easier for the month. Maybe you can incorporate AMFT recipes into your Thanksgiving feast!

If you have questions about this month’s format, please leave them below.

Yay! I am excited. I wish I knew what was first, just because I’m on my way to the store now, but I’ll be patient. Sort of. :-)

    • Serene October 30, 2010 at 4:43 PM #

(for some value of “patient” that equals “choosing a recipe to do now and shopping for it today because hey, I can always post it later”) :-)

      • KY October 30, 2010 at 5:48 PM #

Hi Serene, from what LW said, we can decide the order of the recipes this month so you can choose which will be first. :)

        • Serene November 2, 2010 at 2:55 AM #

Ohhhhh, I misunderstood. I thought the group was going to decide the order. Thank you for clearing that up. I need to work on my reading comprehension. :-)

I love this selection! And I’m so glad the Caramel-Topped Semolina Cake made it into the line-up. It’s a very unusual cake that’s beloved in France, but not well known here, so it should be fun.

  3. Lethally Delicious October 30, 2010 at 4:54 PM #

What great picks! You could make a complete menu with this month’s recipes.

  4. teaandscones October 30, 2010 at 5:03 PM #

    Another delicious month.

  5. napangel October 30, 2010 at 5:06 PM #

I think this is an AWESOME idea. Can’t wait to make all four of these! (I’m intrigued by that semolina cake. I LOVE Cream of Wheat, so that one will be fun for me.)

  6. Michal Sänger October 30, 2010 at 5:32 PM #

OK good idea. BTW could you write also the page number where in book the recipe is?

    • LW October 30, 2010 at 6:56 PM #

      Yes.

    • Jill October 30, 2010 at 7:06 PM #

Thank you Michal! I was going to ask the same thing. Page numbers would be really helpful.

  7. StephIrey October 30, 2010 at 6:05 PM #

Great idea! Does this mean that we still post one recipe each Friday (just our choice which one)?

  8. Caroline October 30, 2010 at 7:30 PM #

I just looked up all the November recipes…couldn’t help drooling a bit on the book. Can’t wait to try each one!

  9. flourchild October 30, 2010 at 8:10 PM #

I really love the line up for this month . The Caramel-Topped Semolina Cake sounds wondeful. Im excited to try it! Im loving this FFWD group!

  10. passionate_cocinera October 30, 2010 at 8:34 PM #

Love this idea! I am looking forward to making all these but especially the pumpkin-gorgonzola flans because I love both main ingredients.

  11. LaJuana October 30, 2010 at 9:56 PM #

Terrific idea Laurie! Not that I’ll be able to stop at 4 recipes per month…but the concept is brillant during this time of year! Thanks!

  12. gigi October 30, 2010 at 10:37 PM #

I’m excited! My husband just made a request for the Potato Gratin! This will be really fun!

    • Serene November 2, 2010 at 2:57 AM #

Expect a treat. That was SO DELICIOUS!! It was all I could do not to eat it all and not share a bit of it.

  13. Monica October 30, 2010 at 11:08 PM #

The recipes are a whole meal and i already made 2 yesterday , super rocking!!
Dorie is fantastic and the whole exprnce in the kitchen , baking and simmering these recipes, taking pics , is super fun with a delicious result!!

  17. SisBoom October 31, 2010 at 9:53 AM #

Though I love structure this is a fun idea… When I saw the Semolina cake in the lineup I was intrigued and read the recipe and thought it sounded amazing. I was going to make it tonight anyway even if it wasn’t chosen. I like how the selections could be grouped together for a meal. Wish I was that ambitious!

I love this idea of making any of the selections during any part of the month. Brilliant! Can’t wait to get started cooking. I’m excited to try all these recipes! I think I’m most excited to try the pumpkin gorganzola flan! Mmmmmm. Also, thanks so much for posting the page numbers!

  19. Kendra October 31, 2010 at 4:27 PM #

Great recipes— I am really looking forward to making the Potato Gratin.

  20. SoupAddict Karen October 31, 2010 at 5:30 PM #

I love this idea! Going through the recipes on Friday will be really fun, seeing what everyone has done on the dishes yet to be made.

I’ve already made the chicken, and folks, whatever you do, do not skip the bread part. It’s one of the most delicious things I’ve ever had in my life. I roasted a chicken yesterday for soup and did the bread bed, serving it right along side the soup to much praise. So, so, sooooo delicious.

    • Good Bite In November 1, 2010 at 5:47 AM #

Ditto the command not to skip the bread bit … it’s amazing … amazing amazing … just ignore how unhealthy it must be!

    • napangel November 1, 2010 at 11:50 AM #

I also ditto the bread command! I used two slices of bread, and my husband and I shared one of them. I offered a bite (one bite!) of the second one to my 14-year-old son, and the next thing I knew, he head eaten the whole thing.

  21. Judy22 October 31, 2010 at 10:31 PM #

Made the potato gratin last night — delicious! Make sure you let it rest 10 minutes. The chicken will be on the menu this week. Good timing because I’m out of chicken stock, so I’ll be using the carcass.

  22. Seattlepastrygirl October 31, 2010 at 11:58 PM #

My book arrived ! Can’t wait to get started-thank you so much for creating this group.

  23. buttercreambarbie November 1, 2010 at 1:14 AM #

caramel topped anything is a winner in my books!

  24. KWAB November 1, 2010 at 12:34 PM #

I’m so excited there are so many Thanksgiving-worthy recipes on the list!

  25. Laraknight November 1, 2010 at 1:44 PM #

Great picks – I think I am going to proceed in the order the dishes were listed. Wonderful picks for the month of November!!!

  26. Create Amazing Meals November 1, 2010 at 4:52 PM #

Wonderful! I made the “Boeuf a la Mode” Saturday night & it was incredible!

I even had some Gougeres left in the freezer to serve with the salad course!

:Looking forward to continuing on this adventure with all of you!

  27. RedsKitchenDiaries November 2, 2010 at 5:48 AM #

Let’s see … since I made a butternut squash gratin last night, (recipe to be posted tomorrow), the potato gratin will need to be pushed back a bit …

The mister is pumpkin- AND gorgonzola-averse, so I’m going to need to time that for when he’s not around …

I’m going to push the boat out and do the semolina cake this week, the “lazy-man’s chicken” next week, then the dauphinoise and finish the month with the pumpkin gorgonzola flans …

oh, yeah … November is going to be a good month! :-)

and, if I can get a jump on next month, can we do the Squash and Brussels sprouts recipe in early December??? Sprouts are a staple for Christmas dinner here in the UK – I’d love to be able to offer this dish as a substitute

I’m nuts. I made all four recipes yesterday. ‘Twas a crazy day! And while I’ll save all my thoughts and everyone’s likes/dislikes for the individual posts, I will echo the thoughts of some other members who commented here before me:

Don’t skip the bread trick! (And thank you, Dorie, for sharing that trick in the first place!)

I have a new “bed time story” every Friday night…I enjoy reading all your posts and seeing your photos. I like to see your completed foods and to also enjoy your creativity. This is a fun group and you make me even more excited for the November assignments. Technology is amazing and so are all of you! You are a positive group and seem to want to help each other be successful. Wonderful! Thanks for the fun!!! See you all Friday. Can’t wait to see what you have all chosen to cook.
