Everyone makes mistakes, even mothers, and mine – as warm, wonderful and loving as she was – made a big mistake and she made it the day I was born: She had me in Brooklyn instead of Paris!  I forgave her, of course, but I spent the greater part of my adult life making up for her error.

From the instant I first stepped foot in Paris, I was hooked.  I loved everything about the city – the look, the style, the language, the people, the food, the food, the food – and I wanted to learn all there was to know about it.  Now, more than 30 years later (13 of those years dividing my time between my American kitchens and my adorable kitchen in Paris), I get to share everything I’ve learned and everything I love about my second home in Around My French Table.

Around My French Table is my tenth book.  My first, Sweet Times, was published in 1991.  Between that book and AMFT, I’ve written Baking with Julia, the book that accompanied Julia Child’s television series of the same name; Desserts by Pierre Herme, in which I got to introduce the “Picasso of Pastry” (that’s what Jeffrey Steingarten called Pierre in Vogue), to Americans; The Café Boulud Cookbook, a collection of French-American recipes from Daniel Boulud; Chocolate Desserts by Pierre Herme; and Paris Sweets, Great Desserts from the City’s Best Pastry Shops.

In between, I won an IACP Cookbook of the Year Award for Desserts by Pierre Herme and four James Beard Awards, one of them for Baking From My Home to Yours ;was inducted into The Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America, a very swell honor; and became chief cook and bottle washer at www.doriegreenspan.com

Oh, and I have three kitchens: one in New York City, one in Westbrook, CT and one in Paris, which is fabulous, but challenging for someone as disorganized as I am.  Thank goodness my husband, Michael, is neater than I am and that our son, Joshua, is beyond the stage of caring that no matter what kitchen he’s in, I’ve already finished the ice cream.
